Segway Riders Club Debuts Segway Polo at The Villages Polo Club This Weekend

THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA – October 3, 2010 – You just never know what the Segway Riders’ Club of The Villages, Florida will come up with next. Last week they were making a $10,000.00 donation to the Segs4Vets organization at Veteran’s Memorial Park of The Villages. This weekend they were playing Segway Polo (no kidding, polo on Segways?) at the The Villages Polo Club between the afternoon Polo Games (the ones with real horses).
After just over one hour of practice earlier in the week, and some expert coaching by Dale Asbury of Segway of Central Florida, ten of the Segway Club members took to the polo fields this Sunday in an amazing exhibition of skill and dexterity while riding their hi-tech gyroscopically balanced devices. Earlier in the year the Segway Club entertained guests at the Polo Club with a Segway drill team performance during halftime but this weekend’s antics took their Segway gliding to a whole new level.
Segway polo is similar to horse polo, except that instead of playing on horseback, each player rides a Segway PT on the field. The rules have been adapted from bicycle polo and horse polo. Although not a major sport, Segway polo is gaining popularity and teams have begun forming in the United States, Germany, Spain, and New Zealand among others. International competitions take place and the International Segway Polo Association (ISPA) has been established as the official governing body for Segway Polo.
The Segway Polo world championship is the Woz Challenge Cup which was established in 2006 when the Silicon Valley Aftershocks played the New Zealand Pole Blacks in Auckland, New Zealand. The games are named in honor of Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, who decided he wanted to do something more exciting on his new form of transport than just riding it around Silicon Valley.
Chances are we will see more from this group of mallet wielding Villages Seggers as they hone their skills and turn up the heat in this exciting new sport.
