Segway Riders' Club raises $10,000 for Segs4Vets
10/02/2010
THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA – September 28, 2010 – A group of Villagers enamored with riding Segway personal transporters has found a way to share their love of the unique vehicles with wounded military veterans who can use them to restore a measure of normalcy to their lives.
In less than two years, through various events and other charitable activities, the Segway Riders Club of The Villages raised $10,000 for Segs4Vets.
On Tuesday afternoon members gathered at Veteran’s Memorial Park of The Villages to present their donation to representatives of Segs4Vets. Acknowledgement was made to John Rohan, Pam Henry and Debbie Hurt of the VCCDD and Recreation Department who were instrumental in helping residents to get the Segway Riders Club started and in organizing and hosting the fund raising events that have helped to make the donation possible. Segway Riders Club founders Tom and Barbara Davis and other club members were also recognized for their tireless efforts in executing many fund raising events.
The Segs4Vets program provides injured Gulf War veterans with a universally designed mobility device, not yet available through their present benefit package, which does not draw attention to their disability while providing a more healthful psychological and physiological quality of life. The Segs4Vets organization, which only awarded 16 Segways through 2006 has now awarded more than 500 of the devices to disabled soldiers, was presented the Secretary of the Army’s Public Service Award for distinguished public service in providing outstanding support to our Nation’s Veterans. The organization plans to provide 1,000 units to veterans through 2012. There are currently over 2,700 applicants in the Segs4Vets program awaiting Segway units.
On Saturday, November 6, the Segway Riders Club of The Villages will present Segways to Vets at the Florida Carriage Museum & Resort at 2:30pm. This is day two of a six day event at the FCMR - "Guardians of Freedom: Celebrating America's Veterans".
